An art-house-like homage to old-time horror. Hits its target perfectly. (by S_Soma)
On the face of it, MOM AND DAD is an oddball horror film about parents who suddenly and inexplicably turn into homicidal maniacs but only with respect to their own children. However, I'm frankly astounded at the number of reviewers, professional and amateur alike, who seem, from my perspective, to completely fail to "get" what MOM AND DAD is all about. In order to explain myself I'll have to depart from my normal style of movie review.Once upon a time, very long ago, cheap 'n' cheesy horror pictures of the drive-in theater variety had a certain unmistakable <more>
"style" to them. To really grasp this style would require viewing a collection of such movies to get a "feel" for them, but in lieu of that I'll give a list of common characteristics possessed by such films. The basic presentation could only be called "lurid", outlandish and over-the-top. Lower quality film stock was usually employed to reduce production costs, making the movie look sort of blurry and mushy, bordering on the out-of-focus. The sound was usually of poor quality, oversaturated and dull and featuring a narrow frequency range. A lot of the music had the sense of being canned and stock, often jarringly orchestral, sometimes almost drowning out the dialogue and sound effects and feeling inappropriate to the scene, almost like the music you would hear in porno flicks of the time, just sort of stuck on. There's almost always a consistent overuse of the low angle up-shot, giving many scenes and characters a distorted and menacing look. Shots of people's faces would be far too close up, giving their features a distorted and unpleasant perspective. And so on.MOM AND DAD is, in effect, sort of an "art-house film". It is made to be a homage to low-budget horror films from about four decades ago. It takes the setting of present-day and applies the horror filmmaking sensibilities of 40 years ago. And, may I say, in my opinion, it does so perfectly. And, also in my opinion, it should be judged accordingly. The plot line is lurid, ridiculous and absurd. It is SUPPOSED to be lurid, ridiculous and absurd. The plot is merely the Christmas tree upon which the ornaments of style and artistry are hung. It could have been a double feature at the drive-in with ITS ALIVE or perhaps NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD or maybe the original THE BLOB.Hopefully this explains to the reader why I gave MOM AND DAD a 10/10. I judge movies not by their mass appeal but by how well they accomplish what they set out to make, and MOM AND DAD hit its target squarely and I'm guessing it took a great deal of skill and artistic creativity to do it. It is both fun and creepily anachronistic all at the same time.Whether or not I would recommend that you watch it is more determined by who you are as a viewer than anything else. Like regular "art-house film" efforts, I would guess it's appeal is very narrow and well-defined. It's attempt to create a work of art is completely uncompromised by any desire to have broad appeal, and so it doesn't. If you're someone who lived through the source era and are down for a bit of nostalgia, if you're a film student or a buff, or if you enjoy exploring filmmaking styles, then you should definitely give this movie a watch. But if you're, say, a millennial who is thoroughly and permanently shackled to your me-only, now-only myopic mindset, you're not going to be able to grasp the point of making such a movie let alone enjoy it.On a final note, one particular scene of MOM AND DAD, literally perfect in every way and one of the funniest things I've ever seen, was one in which Nicholas Cage has just been subjected to an explosion by his kids, who are simply trying to protect themselves from his inexplicable homicidal rage. Cage reappears after the explosion looking much the worse for wear and sporting several Froot Loops stuck to his face from the explosion. This tableau captured every element of the plot, the style, and the point of the film in a single image. Anything other than Froot Loops would not have been so perfect. If this is not the image for the poster, it definitely should have been.
Honestly can't say any more without spoiling the plot, just watch this! (by markthomassintek)
REVIEW - MOM AND DAD If this film was made by Alfred Hitchcock it would be another one of his classics, yes you've read correctly but for some strange reason I'm not sure if this truly scary film is even going to be on at the cinema because its excellent. Honestly can't say any more without spoiling the plot, just watch this! 1 or 2 small references to Trumps American especially the gun laws but these actually add to the story and don't detract.Rating 10 out of 10
Brilliant (by nicolabeasley)
I just wanted to say just watched this with my partner and I don't think I've watched anything like this before especially when it consists of parents killing their kids as always suppurb acting of Nicholas cage it was totally different
Poignant, Truthful. A reflection no one wants to see in the mirror. (by keanutcarson)
I understand how low level thinkers wouldn't enjoy this title. Audiences who watch flicks based on star power alone are better suited for the super hero genre.... This is a film that won't necessarily make you think... its as natural as checking your instagram feed. We are full of hate, and we have no aim. Humanity digs and digs its own grave. This isn't a film for people who need every little detail spelled out for them... this isn't for people who need to ask their partner questions about the film on screen in a theater. Cage's madness brings back memories of his <more>
performance in "Bad Lieutenant Port of Call: New Orleans", and on the whole the narrative and visual direction is reminiscent of Adult Swim's mid to late 2010s series "Infomercials", but the main attraction is the overall tension and atmosphere that some of us feel every day as soon as we leave the house. It calls back to books read in high school to distract from cruel reality. It is a psychosis, and it takes skill to bring it to the screen without cheese, but instead with topicality. Looking for politics? Go watch a low level thinking film like the new Purge. This is for those who realize chaos is always a stone's throw away... An additional aside: the sound design in this film is impeccable. The hardcore industrial/contemporary dubstep hulking soundscape is the perfect soundtrack to repressed memories. Some synth bass stabs reminiscent of classic works by comedy trio "Million Dollar Extreme" as well. Great film! Hope it finds the audience it deserves!
A strange disorder suddenly causes parents to violently turn against their own children, forcing a suburban teen and her younger brother to evade the clutches of their now-deranged mom and dad. However, their situation gets even more complicated when their grandparents show up for a visit........If you take 28 Days Later, add The Crazies, and then let the director of the Crank films let Nicolas Cage go nuts with the script, you have this bonkers film. It's nothing more than an exercise into the weird and wonderful world of the exploitation film, rife in the late seventies and eighties, <more>
these films were made for the thirsty gore-hound teenager, made only to titilate and shock the audience. If you've seen any of Taylor's collaborations with Neveldine, you know that their films are bizarre to say the least. The unique selling point of this is simply Cage. After a long hiatus, he's back to his screaming bat crazy best, laughing at death, running around like a loon, and almost being operatic with his use of profanity. It's just a shame that he isn't in it a little bit more. The film doesn't really have an explanation for the phenomena, and it's structure is a little jarring, having flashbacks that really have no relevance, and a narrative that can be very confusing at times.Blair is wonderful as 'Mom' oozing menace once the phenomena has commenced, but still having a strange air of empathy about her. There are some scenes that are nearly shocking, the birth scene could have been handled in a very distasteful manner, but Taylor pulls it off grandly.Add a hilarious cameo from Henriksen, a really odd soundtrack, and you have a midnight movie that really attacks the senses in a way that shocks and entertains. You will laugh, but you will have no idea why you are finding it so funny.A real bizarro piece, but a unique viewing experience.
Nicolas Cage doing what he does best (by UniqueParticle)
Refreshing super bizarre original Brian Taylor directed experience! Selma Blair is great too. I love the soundtrack, the pandemic vibe of what the hell is happening and I love Nicolas Cage's black shirt that he wore in part of it. This is exactly what you'd want from a horror/thriller and I'm completely ok with loving it when others didn't.
Good film... but... (by wcb123)
I loved this film, the acting was great, the editing was amazing, the soundtrack original. Funnier than most comedies i've watched in the last few years and scarier than most serious horrors/ but the ending almost ruined the entire thing for me personally. I understand why it ended how it did although i was hoping the adults would become normal again and then the film ends with that sense of something else is going to happen with a sequel in mind - All in all though very entertaining film. Cage in a role that suits him down to a T and the rest of the cast were flawless. The younger guys <more>
'Mom and Dad' is a twisted, maniacal, hilarious, original, outrageous, WTF black comedy that asks no questions and provides no answers. This is one of those movies that doesn't lay things out for popcorn-munching idiots. You know, movies set up as if to say, "This is when you're supposed to laugh. This is when you're supposed to cry. This is going to be a scary part. This is the happy ending part where everything is explained to you."What was happening with televisions, computers, hospital equipment, etc.?Was Nicolas Cage's character a nut job before the <more>
whole thing started? What drove parents to want to kill their own children? In the end, tied up in the cellar, did Mom and Dad 'come back' or were they still intent on killing their kids? The answer to all these questions: Who knows? My interpretation: Who cares? 'Mom and Dad' is 90 minutes of pure fun, with Nicolas Cage owning every scene. Its as if 'Suburbicon' married 'Get Out' and the wedding was officiated by the Coen Brothers.Hey, whatever. Interpret it for yourself!
The premise to this film is already pretty fun, then you mix in some interesting directing choices and some great over-the-top acting and you get a great comedy horror that is entertaining throughout. It never goes completely off the rails but it presents a certain feeling of mania, with some good emotional beats thrown in, that is kept up right to the end.You can tell that there was some real passion that went into the project. It is a twisted subject matter, but also one that is relatible at least in some small way to many. Not just the overwhelming urge to murder the ones you love, but <more>
themes of failed potential, feeling trapped and what love can truly mean. It also contains some of the best use of a meat tenderiser in quite some time.Overall this is captivating B-Horror that pushes the envelope just enough without completely destroying its mainstream appeal. I'm sure it will not be to the taste of everybody, but there is enough here for most, and it has more going for it than just its premise, unlike the disappointment that was Cooties where the reverse happened.
