Don't let the critics fool you. If you love the television series, you'll love this movie. It has it's usual humor, usual action, and as a movie it's messages. From the start, you notice most of this movie is about two things:1: There are other people that are skilled in what you do, though you should be humble enough to recognize that and team up when necessary. People of the same skill also tend to have different styles which may apply to different situations, which also reinforces teaming up at times.2: Some people are sensitive to appreciation and recognition, and one <more>
should try to read into that to avoid conflicts although I personally think everyone should be satisfied with self-appreciation and self-recognition, especially considering people see things from various perspectives and are unlikely to all see things as you do .3: Revenge, as usually, is shown in all truth that it greatly consumes and in my opinion wastes your time and focus, and in the end doesn't solve your problem, and so you end up looking elsewhere for fulfillment. If he was thinking straight, the main villain solution is just to find the right audience, or if necessary a new purpose altogether. There are also some playful references to the original movie series, though I'm unaware if while following the style of the television series this goes along with the television series. For example, early in the movie, the beginning in fact, it shows the team was put together as chicks. However, the the putt putt golf episode in the television series, it shows Private had a life before the team, and it extends beyond childhood.Lastly, while you don't have to wait long, I recommend watching into the credits for a scene. Nothing major, but I recommend it.
Will be most appreciated by fans of the TV series (by david-pickering74)
First ever review. In short, both myself and my two girls 6 & 7 yrs old really enjoyed this movie, being big fans of the TV series. The girls also enjoyed the preceding Madagascar movies - me not so much. Felt engaged the whole way through, had quite a few laugh out loud moments and the plot was reasonable for what is essentially a children's movie. However! That is not the main reason I decided to write my first IMDb review. I am here to right some injustices:1 felt the strong urge to offset a lot of excessively negative reviews. Seriously, ratings less than 4 are are joke for what <more>
is absolutely a decent and enjoyable movie for the target audience. i.e. youngsters and fans of the Penguins like myself. Gave this a 10 to offset these ridiculous ratings, even though it probably deserves a 7 or 8.2 point out something a bit broken with the "found the following review useful" rating system which affects how reviews are sorted. I noticed looking through the reviews up front using the default "Best" sort , I saw pages of negative reviews before getting to the positive reviews.THEN I noticed that anyone who rated this movie negatively got mostly Yes "found the following review useful" votes from users, and anyone who rated it positively got No votes from users, regardless of what was said in the reviews. I am pretty sure that the intent of the "found the following review useful" system was to recognise well- written and informative reviews, regardless of whether you agree with their vote. All these negative people out there appear to be completely missing the point! And yes, I do understand that by rating this highly, I will get lots of No votes from all you negative people. But that's OK. I feel I have at least got things off my chest and left the world in a slightly more informed place than before I started :
This is masterpiece. Being 20 years old guy, i still like to watching this cartoon. Sometimes my 40 y\o father when have a time watch this. It's really funny cartoon where are different stories, like about love, about friendship, about action, about moral values! Each character full of their life way!Skipper-Team leader. Always keeps team in healthy shape. Always says what to do and how to do. He use his "King slap" to calm down members of team. It's really funny and by this he emphasizes his leadership. And it is ridiculous in my opinion, is when he says the name of the <more>
operation. "Okay guys, we start operation "******" Let's go!" c Skipper. Ahahahah :D Kowalski-Brain of team. He always have plan. Always! True scientist! His inventions strange but very interesting :D Scientist's language very funny. When Kowalski start to explain something, it's line OMG, wut :DD Which makes it really funny : In many movies\cartoons in every team must be clever guy, i think in penguins it depicts the most fun, cool and exciting!Rico-"Mad KABOOM Guy" I gave him this name : Very strange one, which makes him very special in this team. He can only speak a few words, and the rest he can only make sounds. That's what makes him special : Really funny guy : YOu should watch him and u will understand me : Private-cutie of team. Very friendly one : He always finds in people's kindness and honesty with Skipper all the way around . When Skipper see potential enemy, Private meanwhile trying friend with him : Hahaha : So cute one ; What about another guys in Zoo. I just wanna say Dreamworks have very good taste!!! All personage are amazing! I cant imagine them in another taste's! Keep doing Dreamworks! I love you!!10\10!!!!! <3PS. Sorry for low English :
If you liked Madagascar and the penguins, you'll love this one. (by dgaminguru)
Watched it last Saturday in China with the kids, funny its earlier in China than in the US.It was hilarious and fun, my 12 and 9 year old daughters loved it. They're fans of Madagascar and watched the shows on Nick. So they loved it.I found it funny as well, lots of dialogue that adults will find funny as well. We'll we all watched the Madagascar movies, so I think this one is worth to watch in the movies. We watched it in 3D, which was so so.2D or 3D, I think it would not matter. Enjoy it with your kiddies. Cheers!
laugh riot , go for it (by inanisumeet)
It is funny all the way , never a dull moment . They managed to sneak in touching moments too . These penguins are wily & go-getters . Nobody can mess with them . Kowalski is tech support , skipper is leader obviously , rico is worker & private is sincere eager follower . They can and do outwit everybody . I remember in 'madagascar 3' where skipper said 'you only get one chance at first impression' after hippo lady could not break the door . Some people are saying it as hard selling and by-product of successful 'madagascar' franchise . But , this is <more>
thoughtfully scripted . Full entertainment for family . Dialogues are glib and mocking .
Hilarious, Funniest Movie in a Long Time Kids Comments (by rannynm)
The movie Penguins of Madagascar is hilarious! It is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. This animated movie, in 3D as well as 2D, is about three penguins that grow up together, find another penguin that hatches from an egg and they all become best friends. They go on all their adventures together as a team. The youngest one, Private, tries his best to become an important part of the team. An evil villain named David captures them for revenge. He's jealous because he used to be the main attraction in zoos until the penguins come along and stole his glory! The penguins are <more>
rescued by a new elite team called the North Wind who claim they are the best at rescuing helpless animals. There are so many funny scenes in this movie that it's hard to pick a favorite. I love when Kawalski's Chris Miller status report says that they are in Ireland when they really are in Shanghai. Another funny moment is when Classified Benedict Comberbach tries to explain his teams' purpose and Skipper Tom McGrath keeps interrupting him by chomping on Cheesy Dibbles every time he speaks. Also, when the villain reveals himself, expecting the penguins to be shocked, they don't even know who he is. I can go on and on with funny moments but really, you have to watch the movie to see what else will tickle your funny bone. My favorite character is Private Christopher Knights because he is cute and he finds his purpose in the end which makes him an important part of the team. The other characters are equally fantastic. The writers have created a wonderful comedy script and I think this movie will keep you laughing. The moral of the story is that your appearance on the outside shouldn't matter, it's who you are on the inside that counts, baby! This movie is a good fit for ages 8 through 18. Boys, girls and even adults will enjoy this movie because it has a lot of "adult" humor. My parents laughed more than us kids! I rate this movie a five out of five "dazzling" stars! The Penguins of Madagascar is in theaters now so, go check it out. Reviewed by Haley P. KIDS FIRST! Film Critic.
Everything you've loved about the penguins and more – this fast-paced, witty, and visually dazzling action adventure will have you in rapture (by moviexclusive)
No longer just scene-stealing sideshows, the penguin quartet from the 'Madagascar' trilogy get their own feature-length spin off in the palpably-titled 'Penguins of Madagascar'. Skipper Tom McGrath is their natural-born leader. Kowalski Chris Miller is the brains of their hare-brained operations. Rico Conrad Vernon is too honest with his words and too eager with his flippers. And then there's the cute and cuddly Private Christopher Knights , whose role in the team seems only to provide the occasional amusement for Skipper, despite his sincerest attempts at trying to <more>
convince the latter that he can do more. Eschewing the 'lion/zebra/giraffe/hippopotamus-out-of-water' routine of the 'Madagascar' films, their solo outing sees the penguins caught up in international espionage with a certain Dr Octavius Brine John Malkovich . Turns out that the penguins and Dr Brine share some common history together at the New York Central Park Zoo – Dr Brine was the eight-legged centrepiece attraction at the Zoo named Dave until the penguins came along and stole all the limelight and attention. Faced with the same fate at every other zoo since, Dr Brine then hatched a plan to steal every single penguin from each of the zoos he's been at and turn them into something else altogether using his 'Medusa' serum. Those expecting an origin story will realise soon after a hilarious prologue set in the Antarctica that this was never meant to be that. Instead, the opening is as much background to the penguins as you'll get, beginning with a young Skipper inciting Kowalski and Rico to break away from their flock in order to find greater purpose in their lives than simply conforming to nature. So when an egg which will eventually hatch to bear Private rolls along their way, they decide to give chase, with a documentary crew bearing Werner Herzog in voice-over in hot pursuit. A run-in with some leopard seals and an unintended explosion later, our heroes are set adrift on a bed of floating ice. How they eventually end up in Central Park Zoo is a story for another day, as the trio of screenwriters - John Aboud, Michael Colton and Brandon Sawyer – fast-forward to the point in 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' where they separate from Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria by blasting off in a cannon at the circus remember Marty's 'Afro Circus' dance and infiltrate a highly secured facility filled with gold bars in order to get at a different kind of gold – that is, a whole vending machine of golden- coloured 'Cheesy Dibbles' just for Private on the occasion of his birthday. Alas, Dr Brine lies in wait for them, and their globe-trotting adventure that starts in Venice spent escaping Dr Brine's tentacled army of octopuses spans Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and finally New York. Each destination is an opportunity for directors Eric Darnell who co-directed each one of the 'Madagascar' films and newcomer Simon J. Smith to stage a massive action setpiece that unfolds with the kind of unpredictability and inventiveness true to the penguins' improvisational nature. There's no point trying to describe any of them to you, because they really are meant to dazzle and astound on a visual level; and that they do with plenty of whiz-bang energy and pizazz, the sheer gloriousness of it even more amazing when viewed in 3D. It isn't just the action that forces you to keep up; just as fast and furious are the witty one-liners that had us in stitches. Skipper is responsible for many of them Dr Brine: "I see you've met my old zoo mates"; Skipper: "We were never mates. There was no mating." , while Dr Brine gets most of the rest, most notably a recurring gag involving celebrity-name puns "Nicolas, cage them!", "Drew, Barry, more!", "Charlize, they're on the ray!" . Kudos to the writers for putting something in there for the adults, even though this is ostensibly a kids-driven animation. The frenetic pacing does come at the expense of characterisation though, so besides Skipper coming into his own as a valued and significant member of the team, there isn't much – or for that matter, anyone – else that you'll identify with. Indeed, even lesser attention is paid to the undercover task force dubbed 'North Wind' that also has the mission objective of stopping Dr Brine in mind, whether the headstrong wolf leader Agent Classified Benedict Cumberbatch , the appropriately-named explosives specialist seal Short Fuse Ken Jeong , the cool and beautiful owl Eva Annet Mahendru whom Kowalski has a crush on, or the brawny polar bear Corporal Peter Stormare who can't resist hugging them penguins. That said, we hardly suspect that you or the kids will mind. 'Penguins of Madagascar' is made with but one intention, and that is as a fast-paced, quick-witted, high-energy action adventure to thrill, entertain and delight its audience. On each and every one of those counts, it succeeds tremendously, and we dare say that we had more outright fun in this movie than in any other animation we've seen this year. If there's one thing we've learnt from this solo outing, it's that 'Madagascar' has gone the way of the penguins.
Fans of Madagascar should Enjoy this Fun Spin-Off, (by lesleyharris30)
Penguins of Madagascar is a great movie with a well written storyline and a terrific voice cast.I really enjoy the Madagascar movies and the penguins are without a doubt one of my favourite parts of the franchise, and it was really fun to get to see them in their own solo film.It certainly dosen't have as much heart as Madagascar,it's much more goofy and cartoony, which isn't a huge problem as it is making itself unique from the other movies, but a bit more sentimentality would have helped. The voice cast is certainly a highlight, the four voices of the penguins are obviously good, but <more>
we are introduced to some really fun new characters as well, played by well known actors,Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely the best newcomer, his character was funny without even realising it and I hope to see more from him and the rest of his team in future movies, also John Malkovich is almost unrecognizable in his role as Dave the octopus.Spin offs are usually unsuccessful for movies, but Dreamworks seem to know what they're doing ie,Puss in Boots and this movie is no exception,it's nothing outstanding but the Penguins of Madagascar is fun for the whole family. The penguins must team up with a group of animals in an undercover organisation to save the world from an evil octopus.
Scene-stealing supporting characters who have become fan favorites usually get a shot at starting their own spin-off franchise or getting more screen time in the film. From the top of my head I can come up with only two at first supporting characters later fledged out lead characters - Peter Sellers' Jacques Clouseau and Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow. I think I can add The Penguins of Madagascar to that list.We open with a prologue of how our main trio became a quartet then we fast forward right to the end of the third Madagascar adventure, where Skipper tired of hearing Madagascar brand <more>
song "I Like to Move It" decides to leave the circus to celebrate Private's birthday by breaking into Fort Knox, which is the last remaining reserve of Cheesy Dibbles. How come we haven't heard about the penguin's obsession with this treat before? There they are captured by their long forgotten enemy, who is hatching a plan, which will provide his vengeance on penguins. The crucial aspect of the Madagascar franchise is luckily maintained quite prominently here and that is the frenetic pacing of gags. The chases are filled with dozens of blink-and-you'll-miss-'em gags and jokes, which urges you to re watch this film at earliest convenience. If I would have to nitpick then my biggest concern is that I was expecting this film to be much funnier. I was expecting Madagascar level of laugh out loud fun but then I realised that it was because the penguins worked in small doses. Also there is a handful of new characters but only few get their time to shine. John Malkovich as Dr. Brine is just excellent and just from his voice alone you can hear how excited he is. From the North Wind spy organization there is only one character who has some lines and that is Cumberbatch's Classified. But the rest of his team is voiced by Ken Jeong and Peter Stormare and I have to say they are severely underused.Overall this is a fun time at the movies for kids and adults and especially for fans of the Madagascar franchise. As usual for a Dreamworks production this high-octane, quick-witted, fast paced action family adventure has a goal to be entertaining, amusing and delightful experience. Well, as the titular characters would say: "Mission Accomplished!"
